Ans: Lushkoff became a beggar by circumstance and not by choice. Formerly, he sang in a Russian choir, but was sent away for drunkenness. He has no other option but to beg.

Ans: He tells Sergei that he can’t get along without telling lies. If he tells the truth, then none will give him anything. So he has no other option.

Q3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?

Ans:  No, Lushkoff is not a willing worker. In spite of that, he agrees to chop wood for Sergei because of pride and shame. He has been trapped by his own words. He is afraid lest Sergei should send for the police.

Q4. Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” Why does he say so? Is he right in saying this?

Ans: Sergei says so because he gives Lushkoff a push towards the right path. He has caught his lie and has encouraged him to work. He gives him some work and pays him for it. He sees Lushkoff after two years and finds out that he is a notary and is paid thirty five roubles a month. He considers his words as the source of Lushkoff’s changed ways.

Yes, he is right in saying so. Had Sergei not helped Lushkoff, he would have been lying and begging on the streets.

Ans: Lushkoff  is obliged and idebted to Sergei as it is he who helps him to live life respectfully. If he had not come to Sergei, then he might still have been calling himself a teacher or a student. He would have been begging on streets. By listening to Sergei, he has changed his ways. He is a notary and earns thirty five roubles a month which is turning point in beggar’s life.

Ans: During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. When Lushkoff comes to chop wood for Sergei, Olga scolds and curses him. She calls him an ‘unlucky man’, ‘a drunkard’, and ‘unhappy one’ and says that there is no pleasure for him in this world. She suffers misery and sheds many tears for his sake. It is Olga who chops the wood for him. Lushkoff doesn’s chop even a single stick of wood for Sergei. Because of Olga’s words and noble deeds a change takes place in Lushkoff’s heart. Finally, he rises from a beggar to a notary earning a handsome amount for his living.
